RCM Subaru EJ# Line bore Engineering Process
Subaru EJ# Line bore Engineering Process
At RCM Engineering, precision is at the heart of everything we do. Our Subaru EJ-series line bore process has been developed and refined over decades of building and maintaining championship-winning engines. Whether it’s a factory EJ20, EJ22, or EJ25, achieving perfect main bearing alignment is critical for reliability, performance, and oil system efficiency.
What is Line boring?
Line boring is the process of machining the main bearing tunnel to ensure absolute alignment across all bearing housings. Over time—or through excessive stress, heat, or improper assembly—the main tunnel can distort. Even a fraction of a millimetre in misalignment can cause bearing wear, increased friction, and reduced oil pressure.
Our Precision Process
At RCM, every EJ block undergoes a meticulous inspection before machining begins.
-
Block Preparation: Each case half is ultrasonically cleaned, assembled, and torqued to factory specification using our precision torque plates.
-
Measurement and Assessment: Using advanced digital bore gauges and coordinate measuring equipment, we map the existing alignment to identify any deviation from Subaru’s factory geometry.
-
Machining: The block is then line bored or line-honed using our in-house CNC equipment, achieving tolerance levels down to a few microns.
-
Final Validation: After machining, all measurements are rechecked, ensuring perfect concentricity, bearing crush, and oil clearance.
Why It Matters
A properly line bored EJ block delivers:
-
Improved bearing life and oil pressure stability
-
Reduced friction and wear under high-load conditions
-
Enhanced crankshaft rotation smoothness
-
Optimised reliability for both road and race applications
Built for Performance, Proven in Motorsport
Every RCM-engineered line bore process reflects our motorsport heritage. From Time Attack Championship winning engines to bespoke high-performance road builds, our methods ensure each engine performs flawlessly at every RPM.
If you’re rebuilding or upgrading your Subaru EJ engine, RCM’s precision line bore service guarantees the foundation your build deserves.
